In the Atlas Mountains, which divide the country into northwestern and southeastern regions, there exist Berber villages where the people may speak one of 3 Berber dialects and may not speak Arabic at all. The Berber people in the high Atlas Mountains (peaks reaching up to 14,000 feet) and to the southwest of the range are still living much like they did during ancient times, eking out a subsistence living and traveling to market once a week by donkey.
